What is an AC compressor bypass pulley?
To bypass or remove the factory AC system, install a bypass pulley in place of the factory compressor. You may not even need to replace the snake belt, but Pep Boys recommends replacing it if you don't know when it was last replaced. Alternatively, you may need to purchase an AC compressor bypass belt sized for your engine.     
 
How does an AC compressor bypass pulley work?
Why not just leave the broken factory compressor in place and ignore it? While your engine is running fine, you won't produce as much power with a factory compressor as you would with an aftermarket pulley bypassing the AC compressor. In short, the rolling resistance of the bypass pulley as it rotates is much lower than that of a factory A/C compressor. This increases the power output of your engine while allowing you to dress up your engine bay.     
 
How is the AC compressor bypass pulley made?
AC bypass pulleys are mass produced using heavy duty factory machinery, just like most other steel and aluminum component assemblies on your vehicle.
 
Why does the air conditioner compressor bypass pulley fail?
If the internal bearings are worn and corroded, the AC bypass pulley will fail.
AC bypass pulleys are often installed in response to faulty AC systems that can be difficult or expensive to repair.
Improperly installed or incorrectly installed belts can cause premature bearing and pulley failure.
What are the symptoms of a faulty AC compressor bypass pulley?
A screeching, squealing or grinding sound may be heard under the hood of the vehicle when the engine is running.
If the pulley gets stuck, your serpentine belt may break very quickly.
What are the consequences of an AC compressor bypass pulley failure?
If your serpentine belt breaks due to a stuck pulley, all your engine accessories will lose power, including the water pump and alternator.
Running a non-functional AC compressor reduces power output and fuel consumption.
